Fun Dental Activity for Preschool-Age Children

Dental Activity for PreschoolersIn honor of Children’s Dental Health Month this February, we’re sharing a fun dental activity that parents can do with their preschoolers. Our preschools in Chapel Hill, Durham and Greenville are all celebrating with similar activities to encourage healthy oral habits in a fun way.

This dental activity is a great way to spend these cold, snowy days in doors. Here’s what you do:

Materials You Will Need:

  • Piece of pink construction paper
  • Kid-safe scissors
  • Red marker
  • 32 marshmallows
  • Glue stick
  • Toothbrush
  • Floss or string

What To Do:

  1. Cut the construction paper around the edges to make the shape of an open mouth. See the picture above to get an idea of what that looks like.
  2. Fold the paper in half to separate the top of the mouth from the bottom of the mouth.
  3. With the red marker, draw a tongue. See picture above.
  4. Put glue on the paper and on each of the 32 marshmallows.
  5. Glue 16 marshmallows on the top half of the mouth, see picture above.
  6. Glue 16 marshmallows on the bottom half of the mouth, see picture above.

As you’re helping your child with the dental activity you can:

  • Discuss how many teeth they will have as adults — thirty two (32).
  • Talk about the 2×2 rule – brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice a day – the importance of flossing, and what happens at dental visits.
  • Demonstrate proper tooth brushing techniques: small circles, top, bottom, & outside of teeth.
  • Demonstrate proper flossing techniques using the string or floss.

You can make the activity more impactful by letting your kids paint the marshmallows black to see what cavities look like and what happens when you don’t take care of your teeth.

We want the preschool children in our Durham, Chapel Hill, and Greenville childcare centers to know and demonstrate healthy dental habits!

If you’re not a Children’s Campus parent and would like more information about our 5-star curriculum, request a tour of either our Durham, Chapel Hill, or Greenville preschool by filling out this form.
